3D and Spatial Design

Inspiring Designers

 Fred Baier

I Love how he takes something that would normally be so simple such as a table/bookcase and makes it so intriguing. His amazing use of shape makes his designs so bold and different, for example, my favourite designs of his that i came across were the pianos mainly because I had never seen a piano like it but also because of the fascinating construction and details of them. There is so much to discover in each of his pieces that don't immediately meet the eye.

Ingo Maurer

Maurer was by far my favorite designer to research. i had never hear of his work before but am so thankful to have been introduced to it. It's rare that you can say that you find every piece of an artists work special in its own way but with Maurer I can. Each of his lights are stunning and individual and I could have posted every picture i came across. I found them so inspiring as each one was unique and the shapes and objects that he uses are used in a way that I could never think of but work so well.

Frank Gehry

Great use of shape to create stunning unique buildings. I found his daring use of shape inspiring as his designs are extremely bold and work so well. I actually saw one of his pieces in Barcelona without realising it was Gehry- the fish- and didn't actually like it at the time however came across it online when researching his work and once i found out what it was about understood it more and didn't find it so unappealing.

Antoni Gaudi

Seeing much of Gaudi's work in Barcelona made me truly understand just how beautiful his work is. The attention to detail and creativity that went into every aspect of each of his designs emulates his passion for architecture and shows his skill for everyone to see.

Bauhaus- Gerrit Rietveld

I was intrigued by the unique design and thought the boldness of the shape of the chairs work well. The main focus of the design was probably on appearance rather than practicability and whilst i'm not a massive fan of the black table and chairs, i think the contrasting yellow and black colours work well together to create a more appealing design

Bauhaus -Eero Aarnio

I love this famous design, mainly due to it's simplicity and practicality.

Turing it into a drawn design to take the dress further and add pattern ideas

I found it very difficult to create a dress design i was happy with so i experimented a lot. Once i had created a style i was quite happy with I drew the outline so i would them be able to make adjustments om paper and possibly create a pattern. I started to experiment with this with the newspaper and magazine print above. Had i had more time i would have loved to carry on experimenting with styles and create a full pattern for the dress.

Life Drawing From Week One

Life Drawing

At first i found it very difficult to create an accurate portrait as it was difficult to know where to start however from this point we were introduced to the method of measuring the heads into the body to allow you to make a precise drawing. The method definitely worked well for me as it gave me a lot of much needed guidance and provided a way to check your drawing and make it more true to life.

Adding tone to create a more realistic effect

3 minute drawings (in a darkened room with one angle of bright light) - Using shadow and dark tone to create the figure not line- effective technique as it makes you think not so much about the shape of the figure but the contours of the body that make up the shape.

After the short practice drawings we increased the time allowed and also added white chalk to enhance the effects of the light on the body.

Using Sanguine white chalk and Charcoal- I think the Sanguine allows you to add a completely different effect to an image than black and white which i really liked. the addition of colour camake certain images much more effective

An even background of black charcoal then working into the body with a rubber to create the light areas

2.5 hour piece. Easy to correct mistakes- turned out to be one of my favourite ways to create an image once i got used to the technique i could easily have spenmanmore hours working om this piece. i loved the overall effect of the technique and thought it was much more interesting to create/look at than a simple line drawing with tone

Clay
Quick practices pieces

 Basic shape

 Finished piece

Overall i really enjoyed working with clay, with enough tine it is possible to create an accurate piece and it has definitely made me want to look further into working with sculpture as i thought it was an effective way of creating a portrait.

Portraits with colour

I actually found this more difficult then just using a few set colours like black and white. You have to be more careful about where you at the colour and tone. I also don't like the overall result as much as Black and white ones.

Week 8- Paint
This is probably the medium I've found the best to use so far. I found it much easier to control and like the overall result more maybe because this is what I've had the most experience with in previous school projects.
